Tip of the week!

This weeks Tips! (Week Two - 10th September 2005)
a) Here are a couple of keyboard shortcut combinations that will help you do things a lot quicker when using your PC: Pressing the Windows key (it looks a bit like four flags and sits next to the left Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard – usually) and another key at the same time will make Windows do certain things. For instance:

1. Press the Windows Key + F will open up the Windows Search window

2. Press the Windows Key + M will minimise all your open windows so you can see the desktop

3. Press the Windows Key + L will ‘Lock' your computer if you need to leave the PC but don't want anyone to use it while you are away.

b) PING – Using the PING command you can test the network connection of your PC.

To use the PING command, you need to open a Command Prompt window. You do this by clicking on the Start menu and then click the Run option, then type cmd and press Enter . This should open a black window with a flashing cursor.

Now type PING google.com (that's PING then a space then google.com ). The black window then should display a reply like this:

Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=241
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=106ms TTL=241
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=241
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=110ms TTL=241

This shows you a successful connection to the google.com website. Anything else would suggest a problem of some sort with the network connection of your PC.

If you have more than one pc at your business or home, you can use the PING command to see if your PC can see the other PC's on your network. Just replace google.com with the name of the PC you want to connect to.

By the way PING stands for: Packet InterNet Groper (seriously)

Week One (3rd September 2005)
a) Possibly the simplest ever!  Use Google to do your sums for you.  Yes that's right, type your calculations into Google search and press Enter (or click Search ).

For instance type 8x6 and press enter .  Google gives you the answer of 48 !  Try other calculations like division using the / symbol.

B) Also try using Google to convert your British pounds into euros like this:

£40 in euros (then click search )

Visit Google website here:  http://www.google.co.uk
